Rosie Perez
Rosie Perez, born Rosa Maria Perez 7 September, 1964 is an American actress and choreographer. Her first big break came with Tina's part in Do the Right Thing (1989), followed closely by White Men Can't Hop (1992). Perez's performance in the film Tina Fearless (1993) brought her nominations for the Academy Award, Best Supporting Actress and other honors. It Could Happen to You (1994) as well as The Road to El Dorado(2000) and Pineapple Express(8) and Birds of Prey(2020) are some of her most prominent films.
Perez was nominated for three Primetime Emmy Award nominations in In Living Color (1990-1994), and another Emmy nomination (2020-present) for her character in the role of The Flight Attendant. She has also appeared on stage in Broadway productions like The Ritz, Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune. In the 18th season of the show she was also co-hosting ABC's talkshow The View.
Early life
Perez was born on the 6th of September, 1964 in Brooklyn to Lydia Perez (a merchant mariner seaman) and Ismael Serano (a Bushwick neighborhood resident). Perez's mother Lydia Fontanez y Reyes was born in Humacao (Puerto Rico) on the 13th of October 1939. Her father was born in Aguadilla in Puerto Rico. Her mother was married to a man twenty years older than her, Arturo Perez. After having an affair with Serrano her mother was already five children. Perez was born at the closed Greenpoint Hospital in Brooklyn's Greenpoint neighborhood.
Perez is among ten children borne by her mother. Rosie and her siblings grew-up in Bushwick at the time that their mother was imprisoned. The mother of her child was born to her eldest child while incarcerated. After being cared for by her aunt, she was placed in foster care and group homes. She and her siblings were often split. She was placed in a group foster family and lived in foster homes in New York and Peekskill up at the age of eight. It was legal to consider her an ward of State of New York until age twelve. Aunts and her mother often visited her, while her father made an unsuccessful custody bid at one point.
